Izabela Tiberiade on Memory and Reckoning
Izabela Tiberiade is a human rights educator and a member of the Roma Genocide Remembrance Initiative. She researches Romani migration in Europe and the USA and has spent years working on projects related to genocide recognition, human rights education, antigypsyism, and commemoration.
In July 2022, she conducted a series of interviews with survivors and witnesses of the 1992 Rostock-Lichtenhagen pogrom—including four Rom:nja who, at the time, were asylum seekers housed in the Sonnenblumenhaus: Leonora Dumitro, Mariou Dumitro, Romeo Tiberiade, and Ioana Miclescu. These testimonies shed light on their journey to Germany, their experiences of racist violence, and their lives in the decades that followed. Tiberiade’s own parents were among those affected by the attacks.
During the event, she will discuss the interview process, share insights into the collected testimonies, and reflect on the importance of preserving these voices for future generations.
Film Screening & Book Presentation
The event features exclusive video interviews with survivors whose perspectives have long been absent from the public discourse on the pogrom. Their voices form the foundation of the book „We Escaped on Our Own“, published in 2025.
What forms of historical reckoning have taken place? What were the long-term consequences for those affected? And what demands do survivors have for the future? These questions will be explored in conversation with Izabela Tiberiade.
